I’m a little obsessed with Wordles as a means of communication. This one encapsulates the things we discover, explore and achieve in a short hit training programme I developed.

Law firm Clarke Willmott were keen for Partners and Associates to be a cut above the competition at presentations and pitches, and aware that it is a very different skill to the fine eye for detail a solicitor needs, but the cost of taking fee-earning staff away from their day job meant they were nervous about full or half day training courses. So I devised a 2 hour session to role out as part of their school of management. Challenging for me, as my usual approach to training is heavily practical exercise based with tons of peer sharing of the experience. Challenging for them too, as I had no interest in presentation training without exercises at all, and so asked them to be flexible with their seminar format, get on their feet and take part.

The result – a 2 hour experimental seminar called Storytalks received some great feedback

I’m also really excited by the challenges of it. We used my simplified Hero’s Journey model and whilst there were plenty of situations (not least pitching for new business) that the team felt they could use it for, it doesn’t complete the picture for long presentations which are essentially updates on changes to law or regulations – they need some extra techniques inside that journey. So I’m really looking forward to some of the one to one coaching that has been lined up to follow.
